Recycling a new wharf

Recycled materials from old steelworks wharves will be used in the construction of the new $25 million cargo wharf to be built in Newcastle.
Ports Minister Joe Tripodi said the construction of the Mayfield Berth four will include 4000 tonnes of concrete from the old steelworks, which will save on purchasing new materials.
In addition, 200 tonnes of steel reinforcement and steel rail line will be recycled from the steelworks and sold for other uses.
Tripodi said the cargo wharf was expected to diversify trade at the port, with 90ha of riverfront land positioned for a range of general cargo uses.
"It is readily accessible to rail and road corridors and close to the CBD of Newcastle," he said.
He said the 265m berth will add to the port''s capacity and help increase its $6.8 billion annual trade. Construction is due to begin next month and should be completed by the end of the year.
The port has been flagged as the next major container port once Port Botany reaches capacity and the former steelworks land is ideal for growth, Tripodi said.
