Lead door closed for Fremantle port
2009/3/18
Fremantle Mayor Peter Tagliaferri believes Premier Colin Barnett has left the door slightly ajar to reconsider the State Governments stance on lead transportation through Fremantle, the Fremantle Cockburn Gazette reported.
However, a spokeswoman for the Premier has been quick to reject those claims.
Tagliaferri visited Parliament House last week to hand over hundreds of submissions from residents opposing the decision to allow Magellan Metals to transport lead carbonate through the port.
Tagliaferri said the recent public hearing held in Fremantle was an opportunity for the public to make their voice heard on the issue.
The people of Fremantle don''t want lead carbonate shipped through Fremantle and run the risk of contaminating Fremantle in the same way as Esperance, he said.
It is the councils position to oppose the transport of lead through Fremantle and this reflects the views of the community.
Tagliaferri said that based on comments from Barnett when he handed him the submissions, it was possible the Premier could change his mind on the issue.
However, Barnett moved quickly to quash those rumours, with a spokeswoman for the Premier ruling out the possibility.
