''K'' Line to trim container, ro-ro fleet 10pc over 12 months

JAPAN''s "K" Line plans to reduce its containership fleet of 90 by 10 per cent within a year, an unidentified company official told Newark''s Journal of Commerce.
The "K" Line official also said that the company also planned to reduce the ro-ro fleet from 85 to 80 ships within the same period.
Rival Japanese carriers, NYK Line and MOL, have already made cuts to their container fleets, trimming capacity on major trade lanes, the transpacific and Asia-Europe routes.
As of April 2008, "K" Line planned to increase the overall size of its fleet, including bulk carriers and oil tankers as well as containerships and car carrying ro-ro ships by 12-14 per cent, to between 560 and 570 vessels within a year.
The "K" Line official also said that the downward revisions to the previous fleet expansion plan will be reflected, especially in the company''s operations on its main Asia-North America and Asia-Europe routes.
