China Merchants 2008 net up 4.5%

Port operator China Merchants Holdings (International) said its 2008 net profit rose 4.5 percent, lifted by increased capacity, Dow Jones reported.
The unit of state-owned China Merchants Group said net profit for the 12 months ended December 31 rose to US$478.7 million from $458.1 million.
Revenue from continuing operations rose 24 percent to $534.2 million from $432.2 million.
China Merchants is the largest container terminal operator by volume in Shenzhen, mainland China''s second-biggest port. It controls nearly all the terminals on the west side of Shenzhen port including the Shekou, Chiwan and Mawan container terminals.
It also has stakes in ports in Shanghai, Hong Kong, Tianjin, Qingdao, Ningbo and Zhangzhou.
