DP World determined to transform Algiers port
2009/4/22
Dubai port operator DP World has pledged to transform the container terminal of the port of Algiers into a slick, efficient machine by the start of 2010, the British Business Monitor reported.
DP World has been granted a concession to run the terminal for 30 years.
According to the general manager for Algeria Mohamed Al Khadar, Algiers is among the costliest ports in the Mediterranean because ships have to wait for about three weeks before being unloaded.
DP World would cut that to four days and boost handling capacity from the current 400,000 TEU annually to 700,000 TEU.
The group has also introduced a shift system that would keep the port operational around the clock and during holidays and weekends. This is expected to increase the number of unloaded containers from about 250 to 300 daily to some 1,600.
