India’s top port upgrades security

India’s premier container- handling port, Jawaharlal Nehru Port, is working on an integrated security mechanism as a part of its drive to enhance security in the country, the Press Trust of India reported.
"We are working on an integrated security mechanism. As a part of this approach, we plan to install one scanner for cargo-scanning as well as having our own bomb detection and disposal unit here," said Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) chairman SS Hussain.
The port will be the first in the country to be equipped with such facilities. Currently, JNPT has two scanners, one stationary and one mobile, being operated by Customs.
However, these two scanners hardly meet the requirements as they scan only five to 10 percent of the total cargo shipping in and out of the country.
The port has already installed 18 close-circuit TV cameras and shortly will have some other high-tech security gadgets in place. The port also have plans to provide biometric punch cards to port personnel.
