French line plans hike in freight rates
2009/2/23
CMA CGM has given its customers notice that general rates on all its services out of Asia will be increased on April 1.
The size of the increase was not mentioned, but it will be levied on the Asia to Europe, Asia to Mediterranean sea, India/Pakistan to Europe and Asia to South America trades, the French line said in a statement.
Most major lines have announced increases on the Asia-Europe and transpacific trades from April, and will ask shippers for around US$300 per TEU westbound.
As with CMA CGM, the carriers cite the unsustainable level of freight rates that have plummeted in recent months as container volumes have dried up.
"To continue provide its valued customers with the same reliable and efficient services CMA CGM has done till now, the group has decided to increase its freight rates on westbound and eastbound trades as of April 1," the statement said.
