Ho Chi Minh City port relocation crawls along
2009/3/17
A plan to move four Sai Gon River ports out of the city to reduce congestion is proving to be a slow process, according to Minister of Transportation Ho Nghia Dung, Thai News Service reported.
Sai Gon, Tan Thuan Dong, Rau Qua and Tan Cang ports and Ba Son Shipyard are scheduled to be relocated by next year.
Two ports were built on a total area of 44ha in Cat Lai in 2005 and 2007 to share the quantity of goods loaded to Tan Cang Port.
The Cai Mep Thuong container port will be built in Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province to receive ships with weights of 60,000 to 80,000 DWT.
The People''s Committee of Nha Be District has approved the establishment of a new Sai Gon-Hiep Phuoc Port.
The Ba Son shipbuilding factory has also completed site clearance at its new location at Phu My Commune, Tan Thanh District, Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province.
A dock will be constructed there to build ships with a weight of 70,000 DWT and repair ships with weight of up to 150,000 DWT.
Tan Thuan Dong Port is still negotiating a suitable rate for land it plans to rent for a new port in the Hiep Phuoc Industrial Zone in Nha Be District. And it will take from three to four years to finish the process of moving, according to the Vietnam Navigation Department.
Among those four ports, Rau Qua Port is the slowest because so far it has not been allotted any land for new port construction.
