KPT tops in traffic handling
2009/4/3
Kandla, the central government-controlled port in Gujarat is now number one in terms of traffic among the country''s 11 major ports in the just-concluded financial year 2008-09, DNA reported.
This is for the second consecutive year when the port bagged this distinction. It handled 72.22 million tonnes of cargo, both dry and liquid, during the year.
Industry experts said that Kandla port owes its achievement to excellent performance of its satellite port, known as Off-Shore Oil Terminal, at Vadinar in Jamnagar, which is a pioneer in off-loading from VLCCs in the country.
At the main port, exports have been more than imports. Of the 18 million tonnes of export, dry cargo accounted for 8.72 million tonnes while the share of liquid cargo was 2.26 million tonnes. In imports, Kandla handled 11.9 million tonnes of dry cargo and 5.78 million tonnes of liquid cargo.
