Shipping slows as downturn hits ports
2009/3/20
Container traffic at Fremantle port has plummeted and trade at regional ports has slowed, prompting warnings of job losses as at least one stevedoring company looks to cut costs, the West Australian reported.
Fremantle Ports said yesterday that container volumes fell 13 percent last month across imports and exports, with new motor vehicle imports down 15 percent this year. Steel imports are also expected to fall.
The port said the downturn, which is a result of slowing economies, including those of key trading partners, was expected to be felt well into the next financial year.
Maritime Union of Australia WA secretary Chris Cain said he would meet stevedoring company Patrick today to discuss possible job losses.
He said it was too soon to gauge the full effect of the downturn but he hoped companies would find alternative roles for workers, with members taking leave or unpaid sabbatical also being flagged as options.
